Born to a family of immigrants in 2001, Ashima Shiraishi’s interest in climbing began at six, thanks to her father, Hisatoshi “Poppo” Shiraishi, a Butoh trained dancer.
As young as age six, Ashima Shiraishi began climbing in Umpire Rock, located in Manhattan, with her parents. She will later advance to climbing at Brooklyn Boulders in Brooklyn.
About a year after young Ashima Shiraishi embraced climbing, she began competing competitively under the tutelage of accomplished climber Obe Carrion.
Under the guidance of Obe Carrion, Ashima Shiraishi’s climbing prowess improved significantly, which led her to scale the Power of Boulder, a V10 boulder problem located in Hueco Tanks, Texas, at the age of 8.
