Jakob Schubert began his climbing career in 2003 and competed in the European Youth Cup and World Youth Championships the following year.

He had become a lead climbing regularly in World Cup competitions since 2007 and competed in bouldering from 2007 to 2016.

In 2011, Schubert won the Lead World Cup and finished second at the Lead World Championships.

That year, he also won seven consecutive competitions to become the first climber to win seven successive tournaments in a single season. He again climbed the Aitzol, an 8c graded route, in April 2011.
