Mark Synnott began his climbing career in 1996, three years after he graduated from Middlebury College.
His first climb was a 4,700-foot pioneer ascent of the grade 5.11a Polar Sun Spire in Baffin Island, Canada, becoming one of the first climbers to explore the island’s east coast comprehensively.
A few weeks later, Synnott pioneered a 5,000-foot ski descent of the Mount Odin in Auyuittuq National Park, Baffin, before exploring the Karakoram Mountains in Pakistan.
Through the years, Synnott has completed several ascents in Baffin Islands, including three grade six first ascents Crossfire (5.10a), Nuvualik (5.10a), and Rum and the Lash (5.10a). He joined “The North Face” athlete team in 1996.
