DiGiulian’s competitive career began at age seven, climbing her first 5.13b (8a) route when she was eleven. She began competing in the Junior Female Open Pan-American Championships in 2004 and kept an undefeated profile till her graduation to the senior stage in 2010.

In 2011, eighteen-year-old DiGiulian redpointed two 5.14c routes (Washington, D.C and Red River Gorge, Kentucky) within a month. She graduated from high school that year and contested in some outdoor climbing escapades and international competitions. 

At the 2011 Female Bouldering World Championships in Arco, Italy, DiGiulian claimed the silver medal before returning to Red River Gorge to onsight the 8b+ Omaha Beach and redpoint Pure Imagination was a controversial 5.14d route.

However, she set a new record the following year at the Era Vella in Margalef, Catalonia, Spain, becoming the first American female climber to ascend a grade 9a (5.14d) route.

DiGiulian’s record put her behind Josune Bereziartu and Charlotte Durif as the only female who climbed a grade 9a route. In 2010, DiGiulian contested in the Female Open Pan-American Championships and won the tournament.

She defended her title the following year and kept up until 2018, winning the competition’s Female Sport Climbing, Bouldering, and Overall Championships in 2012.

Through 2010-2018, DiGiulian won the USA Climbing National Championships thrice and climbed over 30 First Female Ascents, eight of which were significant.

One of such routes is the 7c+ Magic Mushroom, revered as one of the most challenging routes of the Eiger in Switzerland; DiGiulian became the first woman to redpoint the route in 2015.

Sasha DiGiulian was born in Alexandria, Virginia, to Andrea and John DiGiulian, and started climbing since she clocked six. She was interested in the sport after her brother’s birthday party at a local climbing gym in 1998.

Her father sadly passed away in 2014 from a medically-induced coma following stroke-related complications.
